A Slice of History
“Pizza is a circle. Pizza is my life. Pizza is the circle of life.” – Ed Sheeran
World Pizza Day which is celebrated annually on February 9th, is a global tribute to one of the world’s most beloved foods. This iconic dish has a rich history that spans centuries and continents, evolving from humble beginnings into a culinary phenomenon enjoyed by people around the globe. The history of pizza can be traced back to ancient times, with its roots in the Mediterranean region. Flatbreads topped with various ingredients were a staple food among ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans. However, it wasn’t until the 18th century in Naples, Italy, that pizza as we know it today began to take shape. It was when the street vendors began selling flatbreads topped with tomatoes, cheese, and other simple ingredients to the working class. This early version of pizza quickly gained popularity among the locals and eventually spread beyond the borders of Italy. Over time, pizza became a global phenomenon, with each region putting its unique spin on the classic dish. In 2017, the pizza-loving community decided to formalize their love for this iconic food by establishing World Pizza Day. Celebrated on February 9th each year, World Pizza Day a time to honor the rich history
A Record-breaking pizza
We at TukTuk Wine & Dine never forget to give our customers the best experience when celebrating their favorite food PIZZA. World Pizza Day celebrations at TukTuk Wine & Dine have turned into a tradition of our own. The first-ever World Pizza Day celebration was successfully celebrated at TukTuk Wine & Dine in the year 2021, by creating a record- breaking pizza with a 40-inch diameter and weighing in at a whopping 6 kilograms.
This year taking it a step forward by breaking our previous record we celebrated World Pizza Day on the 8th of February. As the evening approached the spotlight of the evening fell upon the skilled hands of Executive Chef Duminda Wanigasekara and Sous Chef Anurudda as they embarked on a culinary journey to craft a pizza like no other. At the heart of the restaurant sat a colossal 50-inch pizza which weighed almost 8 kilograms, a testament to the boundless creativity and culinary skills of TukTuk Wine and Dine’s esteemed kitchen team. The process of creating such a monumental pizza was nothing short of mesmerizing. Each ingredient was meticulously prepared and expertly arranged, showcasing the ingenuity and culinary prowess that define the establishment. From the savory sauce to the gooey cheese and an array of fresh toppings, every component came together to create a masterpiece of flavor and texture.
Crafting the dough involved blending a premium flour mixture with water, yeast, and a hint of salt, resulting in a flawless base. Our sauce, a complex fusion of sun-ripened tomatoes, garlic, onions, and a secret medley of spices, underwent a meticulous simmering process. For toppings, we meticulously selected locally harvested vegetables like vibrant bell peppers, earthy mushrooms, and crisp onions, alongside premium cuts of chicken breast and flavorful Italian sausage. Each component was chosen for its freshness and excellence. Our cheese combination, a meld of mozzarella and cheddar, promises to captivate the palates of cheese experts everywhere.
As the aroma of freshly baked dough filled the air, onlookers were spellbound by the sight of this culinary marvel taking shape before their eyes. It was a testament to the artistry and dedication that define TukTuk Wine & Dine’s culinary philosophy—a celebration of innovation, flavor, and the joy of sharing exceptional food with others.
